### The Core Roll All skill and characteristic checks in Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition use percentile dice (1d100). The player attempts to roll equal to or below their skill rating or characteristic value. ### Levels of Success Every skill has three target numbers displayed on the investigator sheet: - **Regular Success**: Roll ≤ Skill Value. Standard successful outcome. - **Hard Success**: Roll ≤ Half Skill Value (Value ÷ 2, rounded down). Required for difficult challenges, hostile opposition, or harsh conditions. - **Extreme Success**: Roll ≤ One-Fifth Skill Value (Value ÷ 5, rounded down). Outstanding outcome, impaling combat hit, or maximum effect. - **Critical Success**: Roll = **01**. The best possible result, often conferring unexpected bonuses or insights. - **Failure**: Roll > Skill Value. The action does not achieve its intended goal. - **Fumble**: - If Skill < 50%: Roll **96–100** is a Fumble. - If Skill ≥ 50%: Roll **100** is a Fumble. - A Fumble causes an embarrassing, dangerous, or disastrous mishap.
